Description
A hemoglobin test is a blood test often used to check for anemia, a condition in which your body does not make enough healthy red blood cells. If you have anemia, the cells in your body don’t get all the oxygen they need. Hemoglobin tests are part of a complete blood count (CBC) test, which identifies the number of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets in a blood sample. This information allows your provider to assess your health and screen for certain conditions. The amount of hemoglobin in whole blood is expressed in grams per deciliter (g/dl). The normal Hb level for males is 14 to 18 g/dl; that for females is 12 to 16 g/dl. When the hemoglobin level is low, the patient has anemia.
