Assess kidney function and detect diseases affecting electrolyte balance. A sodium blood test is a routine test that may be used to check your general health. It may be used to help find and monitor conditions that affect the balance of fluids, electrolytes, and acidity in your body. The test is often done as part of a group of tests called an electrolyte panel. The sodium blood test measures the concentration of sodium in the blood. Sodium can also be measured using a urine test. Blood is drawn from a vein (venipuncture), usually from the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand.
